Plan before the final drive. The vehicle handbook takes priority, particularly for batteries, fuel, fluids and hybrid or electric systems.

1. Record the starting condition

Photograph visible marks and note leaks or unresolved faults. Arrange assessment rather than hiding them under a cover.

2. Prepare the space

Check access, water entry, power and space for inspections. Ford's guidance includes a dry, ventilated location and cleaning; consult the equivalent instructions for your vehicle.

3. Organise the work

Use the lay-up planner to list cleaning, battery, tyre, fluid and cover questions. Add handbook instructions beside each task. This is an organiser, not an alternative maintenance procedure.

4. Check off-road arrangements

Read GOV.UK SORN and vehicle tax guidance for the current rules. Putting a car in a garage does not itself complete the paperwork.

5. Plan the return

Keep a dated list of anything disconnected, removed or changed. Before driving, use the recommissioning guide and arrange professional help for anything you cannot assess safely.
